Senate race includes just pair of candidates

The Arizona Republic

Candidates have been declaring for this fall's legislative elections for several months. The Arizona Republic is running a list of the candidates and the seats they're competing for. Names will be run as space allows and campaign Web addresses printed if one exists.

AHWATUKEE-CHANDLER-TEMPE - DISTRICT 20 HOUSE

This suburban district has an open seat due to the pending departure of Rep. Bob Robson, who is term-limited and seeking a seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission. Candidates have piled in for a shot at the two House seats. As of late January, four Republicans and three Democrats are in the running.

Announced candidates:
• Rep. John McComish, R-Ahwatukee, a two-term incumbent and House majority whip, is seeking a third term in the House. He is former director of the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce.

• Jeff Dial, a Chandler resident, is making another bid for the seat as a Republican. He ran unsuccessfully in 2004.

• Andy Swann, a Tempe resident, recently left his post as a lobbyist for the Associated Highway Patrolmen of Arizona. He is a retired Arizona Department of Public Safety officer and is seeking the GOP nomination.

• Frank Schmuck, an airline pilot and Air Force veteran of the Persian Gulf War, is a Tempe resident and another GOP contender. www.TeamSchmuck.com

• Corey Harris, a Tempe resident, is one of three Democrats running for the Arizona House. He is a veteran of the Iraq war.

• Jim Torgeson is a Chandler resident and owner of Jet Media, a sign company. He has fought city ordinances that restrict sign walkers and last year took his case to the Legislature. The bill failed but is back this year. Torgeson is a Democrat.

• Phill Westbrooks, Chandler, is looking to parlay his experience on the Chandler City Council into a Democratic seat in the House.

AHWATUKEE-CHANDLER-TEMPE - DISTRICT 20 SENATE
So far, this race appears not to have any primary-election battles looming. Just one candidate is announced from each of the major parties.

• Sen. John Huppenthal, R-Phoenix, is seeking re-election to a third term. Huppenthal is a 15-year veteran of the Legislature and currently is the Senate Majority Leader.

• Ted Maish, a Democrat from Chandler, is looking to take on Huppenthal. Maish is retired from his post as an industrial-technology instructor at Mesa High School.
